Sacred Heart Parish Bulletin - Sep. 21, 2003

Home

On Tuesday, September 10, 1946, a young Yugoslavian nun of the Loretto sisters was riding on a train to Darjeeling, India.  She looked upon the splendor of the Himalayan Mountains and prayed.  As she prayed she heard a distinct call to go help the poor and live among them.  Two years later she left her order and her teaching job to go live with the poor.  She took the message of Jesus to heart. “If you want to be first you must be last.  If you want to become great you must become small.”  She became the servant of all.

In today’s gospel Jesus took a little child into his arms and said to his disciples you must become like this child if you want to enter into my kingdom. Jesus was showing his disciples someone who, in their society, had no standing, no rights.  Yet, Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes in my name one of these children, welcomes me…”

Mother Teresa lived Jesus’ command to seek out the least ones and welcome them with care.  On October 19th, Pope John Paul II will declare Mother Teresa blessed as the first step to canonization.

Mother Teresa heard God’s personal call to her and she faithfully entered into the demands of that vocation.  Each of us has a calling and usually more than one.  We are to commit our lives to Jesus Christ as the center around which all we say and do revolves.  We are to commit our lives to love those he places in our lives—most especially our spouse and children.  We are to commit our lives to service, not as volunteers, but as disciples of the Lord.

Ministry Sunday

Sacred Heart Parish will celebrate the many and varied gifts of its parishioners the weekend of September 26/27. You are invited to reflect upon the gift(s) you can offer in service to God and the church…your time and talent(s) are gifts from God.  These gifts are given to each and every one of us at Baptism.  In today's gospel (Mark 9: 30-37) Jesus sat down and called the Twelve around him and said, "If anyone wishes to rank first, he must remain the last of all and servant of all…". The call to discipleship is a call to service.  This call takes us well beyond volunteerism, to active ministry…What ministry will you choose?

Parenting in Faith

The hardest “job” in the world is being a parent.  There are no courses that prepare you for this precious responsibility.  Add to that the mission of passing on the tradition of our faith and most of us don’t know were to turn.  There will be four-week course that will help us with this enormous task.  The course entitled “Parenting in Faith” will be held at St. Brigid Parish, Lexington beginning Wednesday, October 22 from 9:30-11:30AM. For more information please contact Jaye Russo 781-862-8724 or e-mail jayerusso@aol.com.  Let’s take some time to help our children grow in the faith that we cherish.  They will be the “faith-filled” of the future.

A HUGE THANK YOU . . .

. . .  to all who helped clean, organize, sort, stuff, decorate, and otherwise help prepare for opening of Religious Education classes over the last few weeks.  We’ve had support from little ones who sharpened pencils to grandparents who stuffed envelopes and folders, and helpers of every age in between.  Now we’re all spiffed up, organized, and ready to go!

A WELCOME . . .

Today we welcome the teachers back; we’ll be meeting Sunday at 10:15 in the Lower Hall

Next week we expect the young people:  classes start Sunday September 28 at 10:15,  and

Tuesday, September 30 at 3:30 (grades 1-5), 6:30 (grade 6), and 7:00 (grades 7-8).  High School students will hear from their teachers when and where to meet.

A WARNING!!!

If you haven’t yet registered!!!  (If you have, you should have received a letter of confirmation with a schedule for the year) you will need to do so at once!!!  (but please, not during the teachers meeting mentioned above).  Grades 5 and 9 on Sunday are full; others almost so.  No child will be admitted to class unless he/she has registered, and no registrations will be taken on Sunday the 28th until after the first class is over.  Forms can be picked up in the office this week if you’ve misplaced yours.

. . .   and a PLEA!!

To date we have 53 teachers—God bless each of you!!  We still need teachers for grade 7 on Sunday, grade 4 on Tuesday afternoon, and grade 8 on Tuesday evening.  We also need aides for the preschool on Sunday,  and for grades 4 and 5 Tuesday afternoon.  If you or someone you know would be apt for this very rewarding ministry, please encourage them, and call Sr. Mary Lyman with their name.

First Communion Photos are ready to be picked up outside the Religious Education office.  Heartfelt thanks to Eunice Laffey who took the pictures and then organized the results.
