The Scriptural theme for this weekend deals with our use of riches. Amos (6:1-7) writes: “Thus says the Lord the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion!” and the Gospel (Luke 16:19-31) tells the story of the self-centered man who cared little of others.
Saint Catherine of Sienna, a Doctor of the Church and a Dominican who died in 1380, wrote about avoiding the rich man’s self-centeredness.
“Shame, shame on our human pride, our self-complacency, our self-centeredness, when we see how good God has been to us, how many gifts and graces he has given us—not because he has to but because he wants to! Obtuse as we are, we seem not to see or feel this love so hot that, if we were made of stone, it would long ago have burst us open! Ah! Ah! Unhappy me! I can see no other reason except that the eye of our understanding is not focused on the tree of the cross. For there is revealed such warm love, such gently persuasive teaching filled with life-giving fruits, such generosity that he has torn open his very body, has shed his life’s blood, and with that blood has baptized and bathed us. We can and should make use of that baptism every day with continual remembrance and great love.
If we see this, I tell you, we will not be able to bear not drowning and killing this disordered sensual will of ours that is always rebelling against ourselves as well as against our Creator. In love with God’s honor and salvation of his creatures, we will forget ourselves. We will act like people in love, whose heart and will are centered not in themselves but in the object of their love.”
Jesus said it another time: “What have you got that was not given to you?” If we recognized the gifts we have come from a loving God we would have to share with others. Everything is gift.

Sacred Heart has had a dedicated (but small) group who made things possible (Youth Mass, bingo, Youth Convention, Road to Resurrection, etc.). They need help – especially some male members. No Youth Minister can accomplish these programs without help. Please consider giving time at some level to support our T.L.C. (Teen Leadership Crew) and those to follow. It can only prosper with the support of the community!
