The scriptures for this weekend’s liturgy tell us that faith is a gracious gift from God.  It can neither be earned nor bought only responded to with works of love and service.  Faith, ultimately, is trust in a God who calls us to a very personal relationship.  God calls individuals to trust His word to them and then calls them to community with those others He has called.

Pope John Paul II has called the Church throughout the world to celebrate the year of the Eucharist from October 2004 to October 2005.  This year is an opportunity for all of us to appreciate this special means of communion with our Savior, to receive it faithfully, and to reflect on its meaning for ourselves, our faith community, and the entire Church.

The Eucharist is the summit of our faith, in which the entire story of our salvation is made real in our attachment to the living Christ and in our union with our brothers and sisters who share in the same meal.

The Roman Missal calls Holy Eucharist the “Sacred Banquet, in which Christ is received; the memory of His Passion is renewed; the mind is filled with grace; and a pledge of future glory is given unto us.”

Saint Cyril of Alexandria wrote: “As two pieces of wax fused together make one, so he who receives holy communion is so united with Christ that Christ is in him and he is in Christ.”  Saint Augustine wrote: “If you have received worthily, you are what you have received.”  And, in our own time, Saint Maximilian Kolbe wrote: “The culmination of the Mass is not the consecration, but communion.”

In times past, people came to Mass early or stayed after Mass to pray before the tabernacle.  Few people today “make a visit” to Church to spend some time with Christ in the Eucharist.  Perhaps, in this year of the Eucharist, we need not go back to past practices but we will need to reflect upon our faith response to Christ present in the Eucharist.  In the quiet of our own hearts, we can pay closer attention to this gift.
