Luke, in this week’s Gospel (19:1-10) writes of his three favorite themes: the problem of riches and how best to deal with them, the predilection of Jesus for the poor and outcast of society, and transforming faith that recognizes Jesus as Lord. In a previous chapter Luke writes about the rich young man who is encouraged by Jesus to sell everything and follow him. The man refuses and goes away sad. In contrast, Zacchaeus quickly admits his sins and uses his wealth for the good of others. Jesus invites himself to Zacchaeus’ house and the host hears: “Today salvation has come to this house.”
The presence of Jesus opens Zacchaeus to a change of heart and to make amends. His life is altered. Last week we heard the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector who went to pray. The Pharisee, filled with himself and his accomplishments, went away from the temple without God and without grace. The tax collector, admitting his sinfulness and the greatness of God, leaves the temple justified. The Pharisee met himself in the temple while the tax collector met God.
The gospels of these past two weeks remind us of the importance of our personal relationship with God. It is a life-altering encounter. The meeting of Zacchaeus changes the direction of his life because of the encounter. Zacchaeus, perhaps for the first time in his life, was offered the gift of friendship, love and acceptance.
True religion is only possible in relationship. That is why Jesus tells us we have only two rules to follow as his disciples: Love God and love neighbor. To be a disciple is to live in relationship. Our prayer life and our good works are satisfying only if they are on the way to a deeper relationship with God and others. The story of Zacchaeus tells us what God can do for everyone who is willing to welcome Jesus and the grace he offers and allow that grace to change hearts, wills and lives.

The newly formed Council of Parishes will meet in the Parish Hall this Wednesday, November 3rd, 7:00–9:00pm. The Council has two representatives from each of the nine currently participating parishes. Its purpose is threefold: (1) to support parishes already maintaining vigils, (2) to share the stories and information of parishes which have closed or are slated for closure, and (3) to invite all parishes throughout the Archdiocese to join the COP in working with the Archdiocese and its Council of Reconfiguration Review to find ways other than closing vibrant parishes to solve the very real problems facing the Catholic Church in Boston. Observers are welcome. Please come and get a first-hand sense of the effects of the reconfiguration process beyond our own Sacred Heart Parish. Questions can be forwarded to either:
