Sacred Heart Parish Bulletin - March 6, 2005

Have you ever had someone say to you, “You must be blind!”  People are frustrated when we can’t see what is obvious to them.  All of us are blind about a lot of things.

Jesus does not want us to be blind so he presents himself as the light of the world.  We are anointed as the blind man in today’s scripture (John 9:1-41) but more than anointed we have been christened. The Greek word for anointed with oil is Christ.  The Hebrew word for anointing is Messiah.  We have been enlightened by Christ at our baptism and so we should never have to walk in the dark.  With Christ we have a guide (I am with you always) and we are enlightened (I have told you everything my Father told me to tell you).

Elaine V. Emeth has written a wonderful poem called

Dancing in the Dark

Darkness, the absence of light, not being able to see—

Either having to grope my way to a familiar destination,

Or having to crawl cautiously to an unfamiliar place,

Testing the ground each step of the way.

What perils lie in my path?  Where am I?

What inner light can guide me when I am lost and cannot see at all?

I remember a dream of a huge, magnificent horse,

And a terrifying ride, when I mounted the horse and

went

Almost flying through woods, over mountains and through

valleys,

Unable to see, the trees and the ground a blur.

In the dream, I began to remember that the horse knew

the path

And had traveled it safely many times before.

I began to trust a little more, cautiously at first,

And gradually entered communion with the dream-animal.

(I understood that it was Christ, even as I dreamed.)

Our minds linked—I knew his thoughts and he knew       mine—

And I experienced joy in the ride, in the oneness.

Peace came without my being able to see.

I remember stories of God’s faithfulness in Scripture—

God, pursuing Adam and Eve and their children and their

Children’s children into the darkness of the world outside

the garden,

Seeking reconciliation, relationship, friendship

And assuring them of their belovedness;

God sending words of comfort to God’s people in the

Darkest night of exile, reminding them to trust and to

see

That all would be restored and made new;

God, rending God’s ferments as Jesus’ broken body

Was carried into the darkness of the stone-cold grace,

Crying out a searing, white-hot anguished, “NO!

Death will not have the final word!”

The cry that changed the world forever; God, sending

visions to John

Of God’s ultimate victory, assuring a suffering church

That there is always reason for hope,

even in the darkest hours.

God is from everlasting to everlasting,

God is victorious,

God is faithful,

God is

God.
