In today’s Gospel (Mark 10:35-45) Jesus’ two disciples, James and John, the ones he showed some favor towards, asked if they could sit at his right and left hand when he came into his glory.  Jesus answered: “You know how among the Gentiles those who seem to exercise authority lord it over them…It cannot be that way with you.  Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest…”

Your pastor can teach, guide, lead, support, inspire, even cajole, but in the end, congregational health is a function of how people in the congregation relate to one another, to God and to their community.

A parish that is truly being church brings people into a loving, life-giving relationship with God and others that is transformational.  They experience belonging; they extend and receive forgiveness; they serve the community and they discover a sense of purpose and direction.

Parish renewal means our ability to notice and experience God in our midst with a renewed desire to partner with God in achieving God’s aims for the community and the world.

Declining parishes have lost connection with the Christian Church’s basic mission of helping people experience God and live the Gospel message in life and hope.

We have to believe deeply that developing a relationship with God in the manner of Jesus can make a tremendous difference in people’s lives and through them in the parish and the world.  With this conviction, we are to create a place and a community where other people can be introduced to and nurtured in discipleship.  We have to sense being called by God for a specific purpose, spurred on to move beyond what has become familiar and comfortable.  As servant-disciples we need to experience the excitement of creating and seeing everything as a ‘first’.

If the majority of the people stay in the parish because it suits and serves their needs we are in trouble.  We are here to provide opportunities to help to create a place that serves the spiritual needs of others and to equip them in the disciple-making mission of the church.  We are here to be providers and not consumers of the church’s services.  We are to move from protective maintenance to high creativity.  If we move into protective maintenance we will focus on the past and concern for our own well-being.  When the mission given to us dies the parish begins to die.

A congregation begins to decline when: 1) Growing the church rather than witnessing to the faith; 2) running the church rather than forming servant-disciples; 3) being people-led rather than Spirit-led; 4) participating in mission projects without having a mission; 5) fixing rather than creating.

Our parishes are what they are today because of how it responded, or failed to respond, to the realities it faced. What our parishes will be in the future is up to you and the other members and how we work together to create something new.

The food pantry also accepts hygiene items (tooth brushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, etc.) and paper products (toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, napkins, etc.).  Cash, supermarket gift cards and checks made out to the Lexington Food Pantry may be placed in an envelope marked Lexington Food Pantry and placed in the offertory basket or dropped off at the parish office.  As always, we thank you for your past generosity and support of this endeavor.

Life Snipits

New Sound System With Hearing Aids

We have purchased 4 hearing aid devices.  They are body packs about the size of your hand, which are programmed to so our sound system feeds through them.  Many individuals have difficulty hearing with or without a hearing aid.  With these hearing devices, we have either an ear plug or if you have a hearing aid a neck loop to use, to assist you in hearing the Mass.

We will have these for parishioners to use.  For sanitary reasons they will be wiped with Alcohol wipes after each Mass.  If you would prefer, you can purchase your own hearing device or the ear plugs, these can only be used with the sound system in the churches, they do not work at the local cinema.  Let either the ushers or one of the Pastoral Associates know, they will provide you with one to use during Mass or call the office, to find out about the price to purchase your own.

Faith & Environment

Pillows are made of not the best synthetic material for landfills.  That, plus the fact that pillow manufacturing companies recommend getting new ones every 6 months – 2 years.  That can lead to a lot of unhealthy non-degradable fluff filling up our dumps.  The good news is that there are plenty of wonderful ways to reuse your old pillows, just make sure that you wash them first…

  • Use the stuffing to pad new pillows making them even firmer!
  • Donate them to a local animal shelter. What isn’t fluffy enough for you is a pillow heaven for an unwanted puppy.
  • Make decorative pillows for your living room and use the old pillows to stuff them.
  • Save them for the next time you pack. Your dishes will never have a smoother move.

Instead of using synthetic sponges for your shower and dishes use a luffa!  Sponges tend to collect bacteria and for heath reasons should be thrown out 1-2 times a week.  But if they are not biodegradable, that is a LOT of waste filling up landfills.  Additionally, the “antibactirial” sponges have a chemical called Triclosan which is officially a pesticide.  Do you really want to be using that on your dishes?  The best part about Luffas, are that they can be grown in your own backyard!

Sacred Heart Liturgical Planning Committee Presents
What Is Liturgy? Part II

In the first lecture, Fr. Walter Cuenin spoke on Vatican II and Liturgy and its impact on lay involvement.  We learned that when the altar was turned around & the Mass said in the vernacular, the relationship of the congregation to the “celebrant” was altered.  The priest became the “presider” and the congregation became the “celebrants”.  As the people of God, it became our right and our duty to actively participate in the Mass.

Please join us on Monday, November 2nd at 7:30 pm in Sacred Heart Parish Center to hear Deacon Guy Sciacca and Deacon Sal DiFazio discuss the Parts of the Liturgy.  All are welcome.  Look for future announcements on “Art & Environment and Its Role in Liturgy” and “Music and Its Role in Liturgy”.

An Invitation From Our First Graders!

Holy Humor

A mother was watching her four-year-old child playing outside in a small plastic pool half filled with water.  He was happily walking back and forth across the pool, making big splashes.  Suddenly, he stopped, stepped out of the pool, and began to scoop water out of the pool with a pail.
“Why are you pouring the water out, Johnny?” the mother asked.
“’Cause my teacher said Jesus walked on water.  And this water won’t work,” the boy replied.
