Pope Pius XI universally instituted the Feast of Christ the King in 1925 in his encyclical Quas Primas.  Pope Pius connected the denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism.  At that time secularism was on the rise, and many Catholics doubted Christ’s authority, as well as the Church’s, and even doubted Christ’s existence.  The Christian world was witnessing the rise of dictatorships in Europe , and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders.  Just as the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was most needed.

Today, the same distrust of authority exists, although the problem has gotten worse, individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self.  Many feel uncomfortable with titles such as “king” and “lord” being used for Christ because these titles seem to be borrowed from oppressive systems.

The kingship of Christ, however, is one of humility and service.  Jesus said: “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt.  But it shall not be so among you.  Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.  For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:42-45).

Jesus knew the oppressive nature of secular kings, and in contrast to them, he connected his role as king to humble service, and commanded his followers to be servants as well. As we come to the end of the Church’s year we celebrate the fact that Christ will triumph.  While Christ will return to judge the nations, his teachings spell out a kingdom of justice and judgment balanced with radical love, mercy, peace and forgiveness.  When we celebrate Christ as King, we are not celebrating an oppressive ruler, but one willing to die for humanity and whose loving kindness endures forever.

It’s Time to Talk Turkey Again!

For many years at Thanksgiving, Sacred Heart parishioners have donated frozen turkeys to the families of our sister parish, Saint Katharine Drexel in Roxbury (formerly Saint John/Saint Hugh).  Sacred Heart has had a relationship with this parish for decades, collecting food for its food pantry, sharing Masses and choirs and picnics, staffing its kitchen in the years when Saint John/Saint Hugh served a hot lunch to the needy in the Roxbury community.
Now, more than ever before, we need to be generous.  The Boston Food Bank has had to cut its contribution to Saint Katharine Drexel by a third, while, at the same time, the number of needy families has multiplied.
Please leave your donation of a frozen turkey, or, if you prefer, a Stop and Shop gift certificate, or a check made payable to Saint Katharine Drexel, at the side entrance of Sacred Heart Church or in the hall, after the Masses on the weekend of November 21/22 or at the 9:00 Mass on Monday morning, November 23.  Distributions will be made to the Roxbury families on Monday afternoon.  Thank you!

An Invitation From Our Seventh Graders!

Our parishes’ Seventh Graders cordially invite you to join them today, November 22, at their grade-level Mass at 6:00pm at Sacred Heart Church.

Pray For Your Priests

During this Year for Priests, The Vocation Office is happy to announce that the Serra Boston Vocation Club is initiating the "Adopt-a-Priest Apostolate", where Faithful throughout the Archdiocese spiritually adopt a priest presently working in the Archdiocese of Boston for one year.   Those participating are given (by random in a sealed envelope) the name of a priest presently living or working in the Archdiocese, prayer cards and a prayer booklet and are asked to pray for the particular intentions and ministry of that priest.  This is a great way to support our Priests and to promote a Culture of Vocations.  Would you please consider this important prayer mission?  For more information or to be assigned a priest of the Archdiocese to pray for on a daily basis, please call 978-462-1057 (ask for Loretta Gallagher-President of Serra) or go to: www.serraboston.org or www.vocationsboston.org.  You can also call Father Dan Hennessey at the Vocation Office at 617-746-5949 or email him at Dhennessey(9) for more information.

Thanks and Gratitude

We want to thank Marilyn DiNapoli for her 30 years as Principle Minister at Sacred Heart Parish. Although she recently resigned from this ministry, she continues as coordinator for the Bread Bakers Ministry.

Life Snipits

People are not your problem,
they are your purpose.

Holy Humor

The pro football team had just finished their daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting onto the field.

While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to the head coach and demanded a tryout.

Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line.

When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach shouted, "You're terrific!!!  Sign up for the season, and I'll see to it that you get a huge bonus."

"Forget the bonus," the turkey said, "All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day?"

Pressing Need

The Linens Group at Saint Brigid has openings for a couple of “hot irons” to fill in the gaps in our ironing schedule.  We currently iron once every 16 weeks.  Two of our members are no longer able to fulfill this role, so there is an opportunity for someone to step up and contribute to the life of the parish in a quiet “behind the scenes” role.  We press 20 – 30 dinner napkin size items a week.  If you are interested please call Marie Hill 781-862-6456 or e-mail mimi716(8)

Thanksgiving Food Drive

For many years St. Brigid families have given thanks by sharing their bounty with their sister parish, St. Patrick’s of Roxbury.  This annual Thanksgiving Food Drive will be held this year today, November 22, 10:00am-4:00pm, and tomorrow, November 23, 4:00-6:00pm, in the lower level of the parish center.  Items gratefully accepted: frozen turkeys and all the trimmings, including fresh and canned vegetables and fruits (no frozen vegetables or frozen pies, please); checks payable to St. Patrick’s Parish; and Stop & Shop gift cards.  Please contact Mary Harvell at 781-862-0794 or mharvell at ix dot netcom dot com if you have any questions.

He’s Looking Forward to Your Visit!

Stop in and spend some time with the Lord this Friday and every Friday from 12:00 – 2:45pm during the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Brigid Church.
